George Poile, died 29th September 1918, aged 24.
Private GS/87344, 11th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment).

George was born in Hawkhurst 25th April 1894 and educated at Winchet School Hill after his father went to work on various farms in that area. Unlike most of his contemporaries, George moved away: he got married in West Ham in 1916, and was working at the Royal Enfield Small Arms Factory when called up in 1918. He landed in France on 9th September during the Allies’ final advance to victory, in which his battalion was very actively involved when he joined them about 12 miles south of Cambrai. However, George Poile was killed almost immediately in the Battle of the St. Quentin Canal, and he is buried in Unicorn Cemetery, south of Cambrai.
